Evaluate people as they are.

There's an old saying that goes like this: if you poke yourself in
the eye with a sharp stick, you can't bitch about it.
On Sunday night football, Brad Childress, the coach of the
Minnesota Vikings once again got poked by a sharp stick he picked
up named Brett Farve, and this time he bitched about it.

But really, he has no room to bitch at anyone but himself for being
suckered in by the ultimate football tease.
Throughout his career, Farve has been a favorite of the girlie men
in the media, an undisciplined gunslinger who makes amazing plays
against rotten teams, then sends his team home like clockwork from
the playoffs each and every year due to yet another miserable
interception.
The girlie men love to trot out his performance against the Oakland
Raiders the night after his father died, when he threw 4 touchdown
passes against the worst pass defense in the league, a team that
already quit. For the record, he was doing his job, the same thing
that's expected of any underpaid private or lieutenant deployed on
the front lines--you perform no matter the emotional duress you're
under.
But they do their best to sweep his miserable playoff performances
under the rug, including the six interceptions he threw against the
Rams, the four against the Vikings, the overtime heave ho against
the Iggles, the same heave ho to the Giants and on and on and on.
I would run out of space if I tried to name them all.
The point is this: the guy is an undisciplined tease, always has
been, and still is. His coach has no one to blame but himself,
because he begged him to come back, knowing what he was.
The lesson is this: when it comes to evaluating people, how they
behaved in the past is how they will behave in the future. The hot
girl who flakes and cancels on you will always flake and cancel.
The sweet, loving woman who cheats on her boyfriends will always
cheat on her boyfriends, no matter how much she tells you this time
is different.
You have to evaluate people as they are, not as you wish them to
be, no matter how charming and seductive they are in the moment.
Remember, Lucy always promises she won't pull the football away
this time, that it will be different, but in the end, Charlie Brown
always winds up on his ass yet again.
Judge Lucy's as they are, else you'll end up looking like Charlie
Brown (aka Brad Childress) yet again. Lucy's always pull away the
football, and Favre's always throw interceptions--they're not going
to stop just because they said they would this time.
