For guys out there who are looking forward to having their first date, here are some topics that you can use to break the awkward silence between you and your date on the first time that you meet and be with each other:

1. You can ask about her siblings to show that you're interested in her family. However, asking about parents may backfire if her parents are separated or divorced.
2. Talk about the foods that you like and ask her about her choices and culinary preferences. This is good especially if you're dining in a restaurant. Talking about food is a topic that fits the occasion.
3. Ask about her work and career plans and what she does during her spare time. You might find out that there are many things that both of you enjoy doing and this will lead to more frequent dates and ultimately a lasting relationship.

Are there any other topics you can suggest? Please feel free to add. :)
Can you think of topics that can be avoided during first dates?

Talking abou the type of music, movies and entertainment you rdate likes would also be a good ides. That way you get some ideas for future dates.

These are all good things to talk about. I would definitely ask what he/she like to do in her spare time, and what types of music, movies, or entertainment they are into. Maybe you will discover some mutual interests that would make great date ideas.

One thing I would not talk about on a first date is past relationships. I wouldn't bring this up until much later in a relationship.

All good suggestions, though I will usually stay away from asking about her parents for that particular reason. Talking about your tastes in music, films, books and future plans (career, hopes, dreams, etc) is the way I usually go about it. It's also important to me to find out how she feels about animals because I have 3 cats and 2 dogs that I love as if they were my children. I think just sticking to lighter topics like this is best for the "getting to know you" stage, later on you can get into the ex's, politics, religion and all that other good stuff.

Keeping it basic is best I think. As the previous posters have mentioned, topics such as music, movies, careers and personal goals are all good things to discuss. You just want to scratch the surface and find out some basic information about the person, the in-depth stuff will come later if dating continues.

Well, this is an interesting subject. When I'm on a first date I want to keep it light and easy-going. I also want to scope out what my date likes to do for fun or relaxation time. Does he read or watch TV? Is he a sports fan? What kind of music? Timmies or Starbucks? You know, important personal stuff.
How else do either of you know whether you want to have a second date, or a third?
