I don't think you just wake up one day and discover that you don't know the person you are with. Everyone changes gradually, you just may not realize the changes until much later when you look back. I think the key to a successful long-term relationship is that you have to grow and change together. The more you have in common, the more likely this will happen. Both individuals have to communicate and be willing to accept change. If one individual wants to live in the past, it probably won't work.
