Last night I watched a fine football effort undone by three stupid
plays. The Dallas Cowboys were playing the New York Jets, and
improbably looked like they were going to pull out a victory.
To be honest, I expected them to struggle. They have a very young
offensive line, injuries in key places, and they're learning a new
defense.

The Jets have one of the finest defenses in football, and a great
running game. I expected a solid effort, but a loss due to youth
and inexperience.
But that's not what happened. They Cowboys came out, and for three
quarters spanked the Jets, taking a 24-14 lead into the 4th quarter.
Despite injuries to their secondary, they were going to win the
game. All they had to do was play 60 minutes of football.
But they didn't. They played 58 minutes, and lost. They lost
because they allowed a blocked punt. They lost because their
quarterback fumbled on the 1 yard line when he should have thrown
the ball away. And they lost because he threw an amazingly stupid
interception when they were driving for the winning field goal.
In short, they lost because of 2 minutes of stupidity, and 58
minutes of brilliance. They blew a game they should have easily
won because the qb didn't focus the entire game. Almost all, but
not all.
People who are great are not known simply because they make big
plays. They are great because they avoid making the bad play.
That's what truly makes you great, the ability to avoid the bad
play, something that was not on display last night.
It's not the end of the world, certainly--an AFC loss on the road is
the least damaging. But it is still a loss, and a loss due to
stupidity.
I have said many times that 1 aw shit=100 atta boys. It is more
important to focus on eliminating the aw shit, than it is to focus
on getting more atta boys.
Winners play 60 minutes of football, not 59...and winners avoid the
aw shit's. Last night, Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys were not
winners. They were losers, because they were stupid.
Even one aw shit will do that to you. Three is even worse.
