This is the guy who has a lot of talent, but for some reason can't
get his ass in gear.  He shows up late, he's lazy, doesn't study as
hard as he should, etc.  And you have to make him perform.

Now, it'd be a wonderful life if everyone fell into the first
category.  But they don't.  In fact more people fall into category
#2 than #1.

If you're dealing with people, you're going to have to deal with
this variety.  And you're going to have to get them to perform.  A
lot of the time it ain't going to be pleasant.

You have to constantly ride their ass.  You have to keep an eye on
them at all times.  You have to correct them when they screw up,
and praise them when they get it right.  And you can never, ever
make the mistake of thinking they finally "got it."

But guess what?  When you do this, a lot of these guys will perform
and perform well.  And they'll respect you for riding them because
you were able to bring out the best in them, something they can't
do on their own.

The girlie men in the media hate this because this kind of
motivation often means hurting someone else's feelings.  It means
unpleasantness.  It means vigilance.  It also means that the world
is not a cotton candy, milk and cookies place.  It's tough.  It's
hard.  It's nasty.

Anyone can lead with a group of hotrunners.  Hell, even Barry
Switzer won a Superbowl with the Cowboys.  But there are not enough
hot runners to go around.  You're going to have to deal with some
"dinks" at some point, and you're going to have to get dinks to
perform.

The man who does that is the man who is a true leader, feared and
respected by other men.  The man who panders to the crowd, who
wants to be liked and accepted, who believes in being nice to
everyone may be liked, but he's not respected.  He's known as soft.

Soft men are unattractive.  Hard men are.  Ask any woman, she'll
tell you.  If you want to succeed, you'll have to deal with both
hot runners and dinks.  Results come only when you learn how to
motivate the dinks.
