Last week I saw an article about the maker of the fake cheese Green
Bay Packer fans wear on their heads denying permission to a group
of doctors to use that likeness on a billboard.
Seems the doctors (who are certainly not marketers) want to blow a
wad of money on a billboard featuring a picture of the grim reaper
wearing a cheesehead to let passing motorists know that cheese is
bad for you.

I cannot make this stuff up. In fact, it is so ridiculous, I wish
I had the writing talent to think of it but I don't. Reality,
apparently provides.
Not only do they want to blow a wad of money on a billboard stating
the obvious, they want to put this billboard on a Wisconsin highway.
Last time I checked, cheese is a big industry in Wisconsin,
providing a lot of jobs in the middle of tough economic times. And
last time I checked, people like to eat cheese.
Hell, I like to eat cheese. I love the stuff. Wish I could eat it
every single day. But I choose not to because I have a keen grasp
of the obvious--too much cheese makes you fat.
Why then, would a group of doctors want to put up a bill board
trying to convince people to stop doing something that 1) they love
and 2) makes their economy grow?
The answer is simple: it makes them feel important, makes them
feel like they did something. It is confusion of activity with
accomplishment, a cheap way to feel important.
You would think that such a smart group of people would be beyond
such silliness, and you would be wrong. No matter how smart or
educated people are, they still act from very basic instincts and
the desire to feel important and accomplished is one of them.
But don't you dare fall into this trap. It won't get you anywhere
in life, and you can't bullshit yourself forever.
Avoid doing things that make you feel good or important for doing
them, while producing no real, measurable results. Truly
successful people use their time doing things that, in the end,
produce a desired result, no matter how hard, nasty or unpleasant
they are.
In the end, real superiority only comes from real results, from
earned achievement...and putting up a billboard saying "uh, cheese is
bad, um'kay" ain't achievement.
