Yesterday I was in the grocery store, checking out, and as I always
do, I perused the headlines on the tabloids.
These are some of the best headlines in the world, written by some
of the highest paid writers. They have to be able to sell tabloids
with a 10 second glance to someone with little initial interest, so
they have to be good.

I've seen some good ones in my time (the classic is, of course,
"Headless Body Found in Topless Bar), but for whatever reason,
yesterday's "Dirty Divorces" headline got my attention.
It was all about Ashton and Demi and Jada and several other
celebrities I didn't recognize. It was salacious, a guilty
pleasure I couldn't resist.
There were other publications on the magazine newsstand, but they
didn't stand out to me. The headlines simply were not as good as
the tabloid headlines, and I passed them over.
That happens with a lot of guys. They don't stand out to women,
and so they get passed over. They're the same as every other guy,
with nothing to distinguish them, nothing to excite women.
Don't get me wrong, you don't have to dress like a buffoon to get
attention--that will only get you laughed at. But the way you look,
the way you carry yourself, and the facial expressions you show to
women should set you apart from other men.
The last thing you ever want to be is ordinary, mundane, and
boring. That just doesn't sell, for right or wrong. That's why
you'll never see college textbooks sold in grocery store checkout
lines because they are boring, and they are in front of the wrong
audience.
When a woman looks at you, your want her initial reaction to be,
"Hey, he looks a little different, let me have a second look."
That's what a good headline accomplishes: it grabs attention, and
compels the reader to take a second look.
So, ask yourself, are you interesting enough for a woman to take a
second, quick look at? Or are you as boring as a college textbook,
something to be passed over again and again?
You don't have to be as compelling as "Dirty Divorces," just more
compelling than the average guy. Thank God it doesn't take much to
accomplish that.
