One of my favorite images of all time is the famous "Rose Garden
DI" recruiting poster, for the US Marine Corps.
It has an image of a drill instructor glaring at a recruit, with
the words, "We Don't Promise You a Rose Garden." 'nuff said.

The poster immediately transmits two things: 1) this is not for
most people 2) if you are tough enough to endure, there are
rewards. After all, the DI went through the same training, with a
different DI.
While achieving a certain measure of success in life is not as hard
as becoming a Marine, that poster holds true for anyone who wants
to succeed: we don't promise you a rose garden.
The problem is, that's what most people want nowadays. They want a
rose garden. Moreover they don't want to grow one or maintain one,
they want it given to them, after it is grown and maintained by
others.
They are forever disappointed because there is no rose garden to be
gotten in that way. There are rewards to be sure, BUT you do not
get them by laying around in a rose garden.
Most successful people I know have a tremendous amount of pride in
the fact they are mentally tough enough to withstand the enormous
challenges of becoming successful, and thriving in an environment
that sends squealers and girlie men running in terror.
Most people are not successful. They will never be successful even
though they have the same opportunities as those who say they do.
Why?
Because they are not willing to embrace the hard, tough, mental
slog you must endure on a day to day basis to get what they think
they want.
Like it or don't, we don't promise you a rose garden. But you can
damn sure earn you way into one, getting something few people will
ever have.
