Hey Guys,
A few weeks ago there was a big controversy over Hank Williams Jr. making a statement about Obama and Hitler, and subsequently having his intro cancelled on ESPN's Monday night football.
I thought the intro was passe' anyways, but thought the whole flap was stupid. Why?

Because a bunch of parrots picked up what Williams said and repeated it over and over with no knowledge of the statement whatsoever. Moreover, I doubt Williams (who I've been a fan of since I was a kid) really stopped to think if it was historically accurate.
If, for example, he'd said Stalin instead of Hitler, the whole thing would have barely merited a mention, even though Stalin was just as evil as Hitler, committing his mass murder well before the idea even entered Hitler's mind (during Stalin's purges in the 1930's he simply starved millions of Ukrainians to death instead of industrializing murder like Hitler did).
People like to make themselves feel important by passing things along with authority others have said. It's called "parroting" (like a parrot repeats something it has heard without knowing the meaning of it), and it's something you have to be on the lookout for.
People tend to believe those who speak with authority, even if the speaker has no earthly clue what he or she is talking about. Those who do not speak with authority, but have great, real knowledge are often ignored.
In the media people use Hitler's named all the time, call others they don't agree with fascists, or label them Nazi's. It's so mindless because if you examine what they say or ask them some deeper questions about it, they can't answer them.
If, for example, you ask them about the Wannsee Conference, or the Einsatzgruppen, or what happened in Katyn Forest, they are clueless. If you tell them the Soviet Union invaded Poland at almost the same time as the Nazi's (Sept 17, 1939) and then conspired with the Germans to oppress the Poles, you're met with a blank look. They're parrots, they don't know any better.
So, two things. Number one, don't be a parrot--if you don't know what you're talking about, don't open your mouth on the subject or just say you don't know. Number two, if you come across a parrot, ask them some deeper questions.
It's the only way to get them to shut up and stop speaking with false authority on things they know nothing about. And, as a bonus #3, don't you dare listen to them. You'll get more from a real parrot.

EliteMate is something different that I have been part of and I am glad I received an email inviting me to join. The best thing about this site is that we get to meet new people and even find someone for me or anyone else. I have enjoyed every second as a member of EliteMate and it's really cool.
