Her married life was "not ideal," she said. She further went on to
explain that she really did mean "forever" when she exchanged her
wedding vows, but now times have changed and "forever" is no longer
applicable.
So, now we know. When someone asks how long "forever" is, you can
reply with absolute certainty that forever is exactly 71 days (not
exactly the answer to the question of life, the universe, and
everything, but close for all you Douglas Adams fans).
What the hell went wrong? Exactly what went wrong for most
marriages: focus on the buildup, with no clue about what to do
after the day is done.
If you take a close look at the national conversation about
marriage, you'll see that it's all about the engagement, the ring,
the rehearsal, the dress, the wedding, and even the honeymoon. But
after that, nothing. Nada.
From birth women are bombarded with images and stories all about
the buildup, but never the after. Everything is focused on the
events leading up to the nuptials, with happily ever after presumed.
Yet that buildup is a very brief window in time, a peak that is
impossible to maintain. Disappointment is all but guaranteed
because the focus is in the wrong place.
I certainly do not begrudge any woman her wedding way or the events
leading up to it. But I do think the national conversation that is
centered around building to that day with a strange silence
afterwards is a travesty leading to many unnecessary divorces and
unhappy relationships.
The lesson here is this: success is not a discrete event. You
don't "succeed" and go home with lasting success guaranteed just as
you do not get married and go home with happily ever after
guaranteed.
All you are guaranteed is a long grind with the opportunity to
succeed again that day, should you be willing to put in the work.
If you're not, your success will not last forever, and we all know
that means 71 days.
