Less than seven weeks after Amy Mickelson, wife of championship golfer Phil Mickelson, announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, there is more tough news for the family: Phil's mom, Mary, is now suffering from the same disease.
Tina Mickelson, Phil's sister, said July 6 that Mary will have surgery at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, the same hospital where Amy is being treated, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Although Tina Mickelson did not describe Mary's condition, she said of Mickelson's wife Amy, "She is hanging in there ... She still has a long road ahead of her, but at least things are looking like they are heading in the right direction."
In May, Mickelson suspended his season on the PGA tour after Amy, 37, was diagnosed. He said he wouldn't return to golf until doctors determined she was well enough to travel with him. After missing a couple of tournaments, he was back at the Stanford St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tenn., before finishing second at the U.S. Open in Bethpage, N.Y., in June.
