Very good question. While I don't think you can paint the entire male population with one broad stroke by saying that none of us look for anything other than that, I understand where you're coming from. In all honesty though, I think you've done a pretty good job of answering the question yourself! These would be the two main factors in my opinion:
1) society does dictate to some extent what is beautiful
2) visual stimulation plays a huge role in attracting a man's attention, that's just our basic chemical composition
I will add though that this is NOT only an issue that concerns men. Granted, women are typically more likely to date a man who may not be considered attractive to most, but in recent years (much for the same societal reasons) women have begun to develop a much stronger aversion to the less physically desirable man.
Personally, I have and will always look beyond the exterior when seeking a potential partner. But we all have to admit that physical attraction has to play some part in our choices! It's just a matter of how much. For me it's usually a fairly small part of what I look for, others that I know place a much higher value on it. I am MUCH more likely to go after a woman with intelligence than I am a woman who has only physical beauty to offer. So don't worry Rougegal, there are guys out there who DO appreciate what you have to offer. Being alone is hard, I can sympathize with you there. But, the way I look at it is that if those people can't look past the physical and appreciate you for exactly who you are, then to hell with them anyway!
I hope I've given you a satisfactory answer to your question. I of course am nothing but an average man, and that is simply my own humble opinion. ;)
