I don't expect a gift on a first date, although it is always nice. And I agree, there is nothing wrong with flowers or chocolates, particularly on a first date. Personally, I would not want to get a phone from a date. Call me picky, but that is something I would like to select myself. Besides, it's not the actual gift that's a surprise; sometimes just the fact that you thought to get a gift, no matter what kind, is surprise enough.
